MONTICELLO, Ark. - The Harding offense continued its recent hot streak and sophomore right-hander Troy Keith struck out a career-high tying 11 batters as the Bisons defeated Arkansas-Monticello 10-1 on Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the Boll Weevils. Harding scored 10 or more runs for the fifth straight game, the longest such streak in program history.
Harding (24-20) outscored Arkansas-Monticello 40-16 in the three games. It was the Bisons first three-game Gulf South Conference sweep since winning three straight at Ouachita Baptist in 2004. The Boll Weevils (0-35, 0-18) remained winless this season with just three games against Henderson State remaining on their schedule.
The Bisons had 15 extra-base hits in their two victories Saturday, but used 11 singles to put away the Boll Weevils on Sunday. Harding did manage three doubles, two by junior Wisley Correa, who went 3-for-3 with four RBI. Junior Ryan Moody hit his third home run of the season, a three-run blast in the top of the ninth.
Harding scored three runs in the top of the first, and that would be all that Keith (3-2) needed. The Magnolia, Ark., native did not allow a hit until the fourth inning, giving up a solo home run to Josh Wisnoski. Twenty-two of the 24 outs he recorded were either strikeouts or groundouts.
Kevin Leinard (0-5) suffered the loss for Arkansas-Monticello. He pitched a complete game but allowed 10 runs (nine earned) on 15 hits.
J.D. Glenn, Bo Whitaker, Aaron Roberts, and Correa comprised the top four hitters in the Bison lineup. The quartet combined to hit 10-for-19 with seven runs and six RBI.
Harding will be back in action Tuesday for a non-conference home doubleheader against Central Baptist.
